Common questions

Tax & Compliance — questions we're asked most.

What is the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?

GSTR-1 is the outward supplies return listing every invoice you issued. GSTR-3B is the summary return where you pay net GST after adjusting Input Tax Credit. Monthly filers file GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the following month.

When is my ITR due if my accounts are subject to tax audit?

For tax-audit cases (income above ₹1 crore for business or ₹50 lakh for profession, subject to conditions), the ITR is due by 31 October of the assessment year, along with the tax audit report in Form 3CA / 3CB and 3CD.

When do I deduct TDS under Section 194J?

Section 194J applies to payments for professional or technical services above ₹30,000 in a financial year. The default rate is 10%. For technical services and royalty in the nature of contracts, the rate is 2%. TDS must be deducted at the earlier of credit or payment.

Do I need to file GST returns if my turnover is below ₹40 lakh?

GST registration is generally required only above ₹40 lakh turnover for goods (₹20 lakh for services, or ₹10-20 lakh in special-category states). If you are voluntarily registered or supply inter-state, filing is required irrespective of turnover.

What documents do I need to prepare for a tax audit under Section 44AB?

Books of account (ledger, cash book, journal), bank statements reconciled to books, GST returns reconciled to sales, TDS returns and challans, stock records, fixed asset register and depreciation schedule, related-party transaction details, and any prior notices or scrutiny orders.
